![]() Although the goal starts at 5 WPM (words per minute), parents and instructors can change the target number to meet a child’s needs or progress. We also like that a student’s goals are customizable. While we think that Typing for Kids Platinum 5 could do with additional ways to positively reinforce young learners, we like that you can track your child’s progress with helpful reports and even print out performance milestone certificates to encourage them. ![]() Typing Instructor for Kids Platinum 5: Extras The characters Tobo Typer and Lafitte the talking parrot keep your child focused on the task at hand, but you may also want to invest in some good quality headphones for your student if you will be in the same room. However, be aware that the program as a whole heavily relies not just on visuals, but on audio too. Colors are bright and graphics are eye-catching, so your student’s attention will be captured for a long time.īecause this program seems to be more fun and games than other software, it’s good to help kids pass the time without parents feeling too guilty about the amount of screen time they accumulate each day. Typing Instructor for Kids Platinum 5 has more games than other software we reviewed, and essentially, the whole program is one ongoing adventure - if your child loves these types of challenges, this is a good program to try out. Typing Instructor for Kids Platinum 5: Games Although the software itself is quite rewarding, be advised that some parents have complained that their younger kids are not as likely to admit they failed a test and go back to try again - if you’re looking for a more gentle approach and more positive reinforcement, you’ll want to look at Mavis Beacon. In terms of ages, Typing Instructor for Kids Platinum 5 has two sets of lesson plans: one for students aged 7 to 8, and one for students aged 9-10, meaning that this software covers a relatively wide range of skill levels compared to other programs that are more limited. Spanish speakers will also like this program, as it has typing lessons in Spanish as well - a detail that stood out to us and that is bound to entice bilingual families. Typing Instructor excels when it comes down to motivating kids - the themed lessons help, but there’s also a cool rewards program that allows them to not just progress through the island adventure, but in their typing skills as well - though, more than one parent has noted that there is no instruction on correct hand placement or posture. Educational and entertaining, these lessons cover the basics, such as proper hand positioning, speed, accuracy, and technique. If you opt for Typing Instructor for Kids Platinum 5, you’ll find a well-stocked program full of lessons, tests, challenges, and games integrated into a fun island adventure themed software. ![]() Pathological liars tell intricate, larger than life stories that sound too good to be true. ![]() Pathological liars don’t show any guilt or remorse about their lies. Pathological liars don’t have anything to gain from their lies. The most common signs of compulsive lying include: You may believe them for a while, but they eventually reveal themselves in time. Identifying someone as a pathological liar can be difficult, especially if you’ve only just met them. For example, a pathological liar may tell you that they’ve earned an important award or degree, but a quick fact check will immediately expose them. What makes pathological lies stand out is that they are easy to verify. If their lies are justified (i.e., they want to cover up their mistakes or have something to gain from them), they are normal lies. If a person lies frequently, that may not necessarily mean that they are a pathological liar. Studies have also found that pathological liars find it harder to hold down a job and maintain long-term relationships because their lies are eventually discovered. People with more white matter have great verbal fluency and thought processing, but they also exhibit problems with empathy and emotions. Compulsive lying isn’t found as a standalone diagnosis in the ICD-10 Classification of Mental and Behavioural Disorders, but it has been associated with Munchausen syndrome (also known as factitious disorder), a mental disorder where the patient lies about being injured or ill.Ĭompulsive lying can also be a symptom in personality disorders such as narcissistic personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, and borderline personality disorder, which can lead to challenges with interpersonal relationships.Īccording to a study published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, pathological liars show a 22-26% increase in prefrontal white matter, which is why they could be prone to compulsive lying. Causes of compulsive lying: is it a symptom or a condition?īecause little research has been done on compulsive lying, scientists don’t know if it’s a symptom or a standalone condition. For example, a pathological liar can tell others that they’re related to a famous person, that they were in a life-threatening accident, or tell grandiose stories that challenge the wildest movie scripts. They can make up intricate stories about their past, which can be extremely frustrating for friends, family, and co-workers because they don’t know when to trust them. Meanwhile, pathological liars lie compulsively and for no apparent reason. Under normal circumstances, people who lie do so because they have a motivation, something to be gained from it. Also known as pseudologia fantastica or mythomania, compulsive lying can point to a more severe mental health condition and refers to the habit of deceiving others even though no benefit can be drawn from it. Or, when the hairdresser asks you if you like your new haircut, you half-heartedly answer yes, despite the fact that it’s not at all what you had in mind.Ĭompulsive lying is different. These are the so-called “white lies” – lies that we don’t enjoy telling, but that are often necessary to avoid an embarrassing situation or to hurt someone’s feelings.įor example, when your friend offers you a meal they cooked themselves, you might tell them it’s delicious even though you didn’t really love it. ![]() And yet, the average person tells between one to two lies per day and hears between 10 and 200 lies, most of which are harmless. Growing up, we are taught that we should not tell lies and that honesty is an admirable trait in a human being. ![]() That leads to a question that I had about the "Survival" episode. And with Ben Bostic - he was on the "Sully flight" that landed on the Hudson - it was this quite dramatic story and his way of telling it was accentuated through quieter animation. Whereas with Simon, you're able to access archival material of Los Angeles in the '80s and kind of bring that forward. So Ross, there was something very tactile - just feeling the closeness of the family and the kind of interweaving fibers of the self that I felt like we could really bring those together. ![]() We were also very deliberate about choosing styles that felt like they reflected the sensibility of the story. We wanted to bring them to life in a different way than they exist in the pages of a book. We didn't want just talking heads, especially since many of the stories are from the books. ![]() It started with a feeling that we wanted to tell these stories in kind of a fantastical way. How did you decide which to use for each of the featured stories? A favorite was the felted wool characters for Ross' necktie story since it was so tactile. There were so many animations and textures used. Something that I loved overall about the series were the reenactments. What do these clothes say about us? When do we want to hide behind them? Do we want to use them to highlight some aspect of who we are? It's a bit of a surprise, right? But what I love about it is that it sets the stage to start thinking about what we're saying through the clothing we wear - and through the clothing we're deliberately deciding not to wear. This is a series about clothing and what it means to the individuals who wear it - what did you think about starting the series with Diane and Paul who are members of a nudist community? What do you think that symbolizes? Spivack spoke with Salon about how Craigslist was a big asset in sourcing these stories, Simon Doonan's "survivor's bewilderment," and why she opted to kick the series off with members of a nudist community. "Of course we're going to have stories attached to certain items, and I'm excited to tell them." "Clothing is one of the most visible ways we communicate who we are to the world," Spivack, who executive produces the series, told Salon in an interview. It's based on Spivack's book of the same name, which was released in 2014 with the description: "Everyone has a memoir in miniature in at least one piece of clothing." In this series, those clothing items range from a leather codpiece to fuzzy yellow sweater. That's one of the main threads that runs through Emily Spivack's "Worn Stories," a new anthology series on Netflix that centers on the clothes that inspire us, the memories they hold, and the unique moments in our lives that celebrate our personalities and bond us together. I think that if anyone looked at two laundry baskets, one from 2019 and one from 2020, they could likely recognize that the world shifted in some major ways because what we wear says so much about who we are and what we do. Going out was replaced with nights on the couch, so inevitably sweatpants made a big comeback. During the pandemic, many people began working from home, so their professional wardrobes shifted from what's suitable for the office to what is Zoom meeting-appropriate (lots of above-the-waist accessories). * Write the description to 'Tweet & Description' area. The clothing we have reached for over the last year has likely been pretty different than what we were wearing the year before. * Write a code to 'Code' area (If needed) * Select your twitter account registered in OS X on 'Twitter' tab page on the preferences window. * Do authorization using GitHub account on 'GitHub' tab page on the preferences window. * Open the CodePiece app, then open the app's preferences. * You register your twitter account to OS X by "Internet Accounts" preferences pane in System Preferences. To use the CodePiece app, you need a Twitter account and a GitHub account. If you write no codes, it will be a simple text tweet without a Gist code and the screenshot. The mode features three new quests Clavis Stone, Imprisoned, and Beneath Seals. People that like Settlers of Catan seem to be looking for more of a challenge, and want to see what more it out there. The other games I’ve noted seem to have a larger percentage of people that like the game, and are happy to keep playing it over and over with little interest to move to other games, which make them less of gateways, and more of landing points. While I’ve seen my share of people that will continue playing just Settlers of Catan it seems to be a great jumping off point for other games, making it more of a stepping stone. I’ve noticed that when used as a “gateway” game, people that respond positively to Settlers of Catan are more likely to move on to other more involved games than people taught with Ticket to Ride, Alhambra, or Carcassonne. More is going on during a game of Settlers of Catan than in other gateway games like Ticket to Ride, making it harder to learn on your own. There are many small rules that are easily forgotten, or could be confusing to a new player learning the game on their own, so having an experienced person teaching the game is important. Settlers of Catan is a straightforward game, once you see how everything works. I had been a collectable card game (CCG) player for many years, and the concept of a one-time purchase that didn’t require everyone to have their own cards was very appealing. I am one of the people that experienced Settlers of Catan as my first modern boardgame. Compared to games like Monopoly, Risk, or Clue this can be a great thing, especially with people who have tighter schedules. You can look at a game state, see who has how many points, and have a good idea how much longer the game is going to take. ![]() At pretty much all times, players can see how many points any player has (except for hidden victory point cards). Once someone can get 10 points, they win. Victory Points – The end of the game is very well defined. Once you build a settlement (house), you gain resources from it when its number is rolled (akin to someone landing on your property and paying you). Rolling a 7 lets you move it once, and thematically it makes sense that having a robber on a hexagon limits the resources it produces, and steals from someone near its location.īuilding – When you’re aiming to show advancement in a game, what better way than to give more houses which can be upgraded to cities (similar to Monopoly‘s house/hotel structure). Robber – Ah, there’s the pawn we’re used to in most games, but it’s not owned by any one player. For players that don’t like to trade with opponents, they still have an option available to them, and they’ll quickly learn that those that trade are building a lot more on the board. If you don’t like these rates, see what an opponent will give you. Settlers of Catan tells you what resources are worth for trading with the board (4:1, with the possibility of getting 3:1 or 2:1 on ports). Trading – Other games allow trading, but often the rules around trading are not well defined. The cards’ color matches the hexagons on the board, easily showing the link between them. Resource Cards – These are very much like currency in other games, coming in colors (or goods types) instead of cash. ![]() You’re still starting your turn by rolling dice – as in many games – and once you see how resources are distributed, it all makes sense. Different colored tiles easily show that different locations will do different things.ĭice – One of the staples of traditional boardgaming, but here instead of moving a pawn the number of spaces rolled, you’re using the dice to gain resources. Having these similarities makes the game feel more accessible.īoard Layout – The tiles make a map, with the vertexes/sides of the hexagons making it clear where paths will go. ![]() Viewing a game of Settlers of Catan in progress looks very different from the standard mainstream boardgames, but there are similarities that make approaching and learning the game easier. One of the things that makes Settlers of Catan such a great introduction to boardgaming is that it uses many of the items people are already familiar with in gaming, but in different ways than they are used to. It has become one of the handful of great “gateway” games, and will continue doing so for many years to come. Going to any convention (or boardgaming website!) and you’ll run into people that trace their modern gaming roots to a game of Settlers of Catan. Settlers of Catan has converted many into gamers over the years. Regardless of the question of what they have actually done with the existing engine itself or within the fine tweaking of the presets the resulting quality in the upgrade is a no brainer. It's nice to see they have tweaked some the presets as well as the engine too. Version 5 was darker and softer with less life to the sound (still sounds great though). To sum it up I would say 6 has more of a high fidelity sound, like comparing a so so recording with a carefully crafted audiophile recording. It seems 5 is slightly darker, more mellow, less alive. Then comparing Pianoteq 6 to 5 the sound remains more airy, piano body resonance is richer. I've got stage so I cannot see if they also changed the microphone position too (non Pianoteq owners should understand that this is separate to the reverb section), but certainly the sound is a lot closer with EQ matched. I was able to more closely compare the two engines, with this allowing for a more honest AB comparison. This got the two versions to sound much closer and made the P.5 version sound better too (mainly the addition of extra bright EQ and matching dynamic range). Out of curiosity I just replicated the settings from one preset on the P.6 new version Steinway D4 to the older P.5 D4 (right click EQ settings to match settings exactly). The Pianoteq 5 VSTi remains after P6 install. Seems like in past, they have been unwilling to substitute. not huge, but is key to my decision to purchase. Looks like Stage only includes D & K2 so Grotrian adds $59. It is not sonically inferior, it's just got a few less options. It is as if the perception is Stage = value/budget brand and that puts some off trying at all, this is silly. Certainly it shouldn't put you off the product entirely. ![]() ![]() Standard and Pro offer good things but most will not need them. That relates to what you can do in any sample library - though you actually get far less microphone positions in sample libraries than you do even in Pianoteq Stage because they would all rely on another set of 24/48 24/96 samples. you can then adjust sounds within the convolution reverb and effects/EQ section. In stage you get a bucket-load of presets which relate to choice microphone positions. I might upgrade for that in another sale but given the options in presets and ability to tune the sound with reverb and EQ.meh, it can wait, if at all. The microphone positioning tech in "Standard" is unique to Pianoteq. I have tried Standard twice now and frankly even in 30% off sales I find the upgrade price a little steep for what you get compared to the options of generation upgrading (5-6 and so on) and individual piano models. You only need "Standard" if you want pianoteq specific tuning tech that isn't available on the sample products out there anyway. You probably don't need what they call "Standard" as Stage does so much! I agree the upgrade price to what they call Standard is steep. Upgrade may be fine, but still steep $$ to get Standard (or higher) from scratch. New exciting possibilities open up as you explore the parameters and discover sounds that you have never heard or thought of before.Demo video of 6 pianos impressed with Grotrian (fav) seeming very cool !! You can even modify the mechanical properties of the soundboard. Some things can hardly be done in the real world, such as changing the string length from a mini grand of 1m/3.3ft to an imaginary giant grand of 10m/33ft. With just a few mouse clicks, you can achieve things that would require hours, or even weeks, by piano technicians to adapt on real acoustic pianos. The possibility to shape the sound through physical parameters is an extraordinary feature that cannot be found in any other piano software. It also lets you position up to 5 microphones around the instrument and to choose from a selection of different microphone brands. It is a natural choice for the semi-professional musician who wants to adjust unique physical parameters such as unison with, microtuning, hammer hardness, soundboard and string length. The Pianoteq Standard version offers several powerful tools for sound shaping and recording. You must own a license of Pianoteq Stage to purchase this upgrade. ![]() Please note this product is an upgrade from Pianoteq Stage to Pianoteq Standard.
